Ed received a BA from UCLA graduation with honors and a JD from Loyola Law School Los Angeles. After passing the California Bar Examination on the first attempt, he was appointed a Deputy District Attorney for the County of Orange, serving as a trial prosecutor for a wide range of complex misdemeanor and felony criminal cases. During his last year of service as a DA, Ed was responsible for county-wide vertical (investigation through trial) prosecution of Arson crimes and related offenses.

After leaving the DA’s office, Ed began private practice as an insurance/corporate defense litigator representing major corporations and insurance companies as an associate lawyer before being elected as a partner with the national AmLaw 100 firm Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard &Smith. Ed has been lead counsel in almost one-hundred jury trials and has served as counsel in over one-thousand arbitrations, non-jury trials, and judicial hearings. He has briefed and argued ten appeals before the California Courts of Appeal, including successful representation of the Plaintiff in a precedent-setting case Garibay v. Hemmat 161 Cal. App. 4th 735.

With a proven track record of success, Ed left Lewis Brisbois to open his private practice before entering into a partnership with Phil Nghiem in 2018. He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court as well as all courts of record of the State of California and the United States District Courts of California. In 2009 Ed was admitted to membership in the prestigious American Board of Trial Advocates.

Ed lives in Foothill Ranch CA with his wife Elvia and is the proud dad of Angela, a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and a 2021 JD candidate at Tulane University School of Law in New Orleans.

Mr. Hess has served as lead trial counsel in more than one hundred lengthy and complex jury trials and thousands of judicial hearings and arbitrations. He has briefed and argued 13 appeals before the California Court of Appeal. Some examples include:

  • Dental Malpractice: Obtained at $365,000 jury verdict in favor of Plaintiff in a dental malpractice case involving negligent tooth extraction resulting in permanent nerve damage.
  • Fraud/Civil RICO: Obtained a judgment for Plaintiff in excess of $1,000,000 in a case involving a scheme to defraud.
  • Products Liability: Obtained a $1,000,000+ jury verdict in a case against General Motors
  • Medical Malpractice: Obtained a reversal on appeal of a trial court judgment in favor of a medical doctor who committed malpractice.   • Negligent Use of Firearm: Obtained a $ 100,000 policy limits recovery in a case where a minor was injured due to negligent discharge of a firearm by a neighbor.

  • San Diego Wildfire Litigation: Obtained a $8 million settlement
