Edward W. Hess, Jr. practice focuses on helping people who have suffered a severe injury due to the fault of others or who have been the victim of fraud. He practices in state and federal courts throughout California with over 30 years of litigation experience; Ed Hess has recovered over eight figures in verdicts and settlements.
Ed received a BA from UCLA graduation with honors and a JD from Loyola Law School Los Angeles. After passing the California Bar Examination on the first attempt, he was appointed a Deputy District Attorney for the County of Orange, serving as a trial prosecutor for a wide range of complex misdemeanor and felony criminal cases. During his last year of service as a DA, Ed was responsible for county-wide vertical (investigation through trial) prosecution of Arson crimes and related offenses.
After leaving the DA’s office, Ed began private practice as an insurance/corporate defense litigator representing major corporations and insurance companies as an associate lawyer before being elected as a partner with the national AmLaw 100 firm Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard &Smith. Ed has been lead counsel in almost one-hundred jury trials and has served as counsel in over one-thousand arbitrations, non-jury trials, and judicial hearings. He has briefed and argued ten appeals before the California Courts of Appeal, including successful representation of the Plaintiff in a precedent-setting case Garibay v Hemmat 161 Cal. App. 4th 735.
With a proven track record of success, Ed left Lewis Brisbois to open his private practice before entering into a partnership with Phil Nghiem in 2018. He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court as well as all courts of record of the State of California and the United States District Courts of California. In 2009 Ed was admitted to membership in the prestigious American Board of Trial Advocates.
Ed lives in Foothill Ranch CA with his wife Elvia and is the proud dad of Angela, a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and a 2021 JD candidate at Tulane University School of Law in New Orleans.
