A laceration, or cut, is a common injury to get during a car crash, dog bite, slip, trip, or fall. Lacerations are cuts or tears of the skin caused by a sharp object, such as broken glass, or blunt trauma, such as a motor vehicle accident. Laceration wounds have a wide range of severity from surface to deep and can even be fatal. Long-term effects resulting from certain cuts and lacerations can be difficult. This page gives an overview of laceration injuries. Laceration and Cut Wound General Information

A wound resulting in the splitting or separation of the skin is laceration. Often in lacerations, the skin or the wound itself is jagged or torn, especially if the cut is caused by a blunt trauma like a fall from a high place. Cuts can also be caused by sharp objects, such as glass from a car wreck. A gash refers to a long or deep laceration, and an avulsion is wound in which the skin tissue has been torn away from the body. Abrasions are the result of scraping, where the skin is separated but not missing.

Cut Location and Severity

Lacerations can occur anywhere on the body, and this page discusses external, or skin, lacerations. Common lacerations suffered in pedestrian or auto accidents include face, arm, and leg cuts. Facial lacerations can require extensive care in order to minimize scarring and prevent permanent disfiguration. A deep laceration can go through skin, fat, tendons, and muscles, down to the bone. The deeper the laceration, the more serious the consequences, especially if damage has been suffered to the muscle or bone.

Cut, Gash & Laceration Wound Causes

The breaking of the skin can be caused by multiple factors. Traumatic injuries nearly always result in some form of cut. The following are accidents which can lead to lacerations with long-term consequences as the result of their severity or location.

  1. Car, Motorcycle, Bus or Truck Crash
  2. Pedestrian or Bicycle Accident
  3. Falling from a ladder or roof
  4. Construction-site accidents
  5. Slipping or Tripping on an escalator, or a wet or poorly maintained surface
  6. Dog Bites
  7. Assault, including abuse

Laceration Symptoms

Usually, it is not difficult to tell if you have suffered a laceration, although other injuries or blood may obscure or distract from the wound. Visualization of the cut skin is usually the first sign. Here are other laceration symptoms:

  1. Pain
  2. Disfiguration
  3. Blood in any amount
  4. Exposure of connective tissues beneath the skin, or deeper layers such as muscle or bone
  5. Fainting
  6. Infection of the wounded area

Cut and Gash Treatment

Depending on the depth, size, and location of the laceration, treatment varies. The first priority is to halt the bleeding thru the use of pressure or a tourniquet. Other treatments for cuts include the following:

  1. Cleaning of the wound to assure proper healing and prevent infection
  2. Medication for numbing the pain, including topical or injected
  3. Receiving a Tetanus shot in applicable situations
  4. Closing the Laceration with tape, glue, or stitches. Facial lacerations may require specialized care.
  5. Immobility may be required for certain gashes
  6. Carrying for the Laceration with topical medication and/or appropriate bandage maintenance

Laceration Complications and Consequences

Without proper initial care and maintenance, lacerations can be fatal. Loss of blood or infection can be life-threatening. Scarring can be debilitating, especially on the face. Here are some potential outcomes of cuts and lacerations:

  1. Continued Pain
  2. Weakness from blood loss
  3. Infection, especially in the early weeks, including symptoms such as fever, inflammation, redness, and pus
  4. Scarring, including keloids
  5. Death from blood loss or infection

I was referred to Phil and Ed by a good friend after my two prior lawyers dropped the ball on my case. I was viciously assaulted at a bar. Phil and Ed took my case on and it was night and day. They stood up for me and kept in regular contact. I never had to guess what was going on with my case. They conducted a thorough investigation and collected crucial evidence that helped prove my case. Initially, the bar refused to take responsibility but eventually the bar relented after the job Phil and Ed did. Ultimately, the case resolved favorably for much more than I expected. Thanks so much again Phil an Ed!

Not backing down, Phil and Ed pressed forward and never once compromised our position. After the insurance company kept increasing their offer and wanting us to negotiate, Phil and Ed refused to relent and accept anything less than what we initially asked. Basically, their response each time to the insurance company was pay our original demand or we are going to trial. It worked! Eventually, after bidding against themselves, the insurance company finally offered to pay the original amount we wanted. I couldn’t be more impressed with the way Phil and Ed handled my case. They really stood up for me and took on a case that was by no means a simple one. Thanks again fellas!

I can’t say enough great things about Phil Nghiem. He was on my case from the minute I called him. He got things handled from day one immediately and made me feel supported and taken care of. His office staff was the same way, replied to every email immediately and addressed all of my concerns. I got into a car accident and called him, and I am SO GLAD I did. He got me the compensation I was entitled to and fought for me and my well being the whole way through. He took are of everything so that I just had to worry about getting my health back. He and his staff really care about YOU and do not treat you like another name in the book. They help you step by step and always keep you in the loop. I can’t thank him enough for helping me through this excruciating ordeal.

I’d like to start off by saying that Phil is incredibly passionate about what he does, he’s very kind-hearted, and he genuinely cares for his clients. I was struck by a hit-and-run driver, who was fleeing from the police in a stolen vehicle with no insurance. Given the circumstances of my car accident, Phil was able to negotiate an incredible sum to be paid out by my insurance. It made my day when he was able to share the news. Most attorneys would have settled earlier in the case for significantly less. Overall, I had a pleasant experience and the end of my investigation was a success. Thank you again Phil, I am eternally grateful for everything that you’ve done for me.

PS. Phil’s office is quite the drive for me, but he’s very accommodating and we managed to make things work with EASE. So don’t hesitate to contact him regardless of where you’re from because he’ll take care of you.

I was involved in a rear end accident and was referred to Phil from my chiropractor. Honestly I was nervous to take on an attorney because I was already overwhelmed by everything involving the accident but Phil really put me at ease. He took the time to explain things to me in a way I could understand and wasn’t pushy at all for me to hire him. I’m really glad I chose Phil because I literally didn’t have to worry about anything after that meeting. He set me up with one of his associates named Bri and she was always so quick to respond whenever I had questions. On top of that they worked hard to reduce my other fees and got me a nice settlement too! I’m thankful for all the help they provided and will definitely use them again if I ever need it.

I’m so glad I hired Phil to help me after my car crash. My car was totaled after a driver ran a red light and struck me. For days, I didn’t have a car to get to work and school. Finally, I decided to hire an attorney and eventually found Phil. He immediately got to work. My accident happened at an intersection where there was a restaurant. Phil personally went out to the restaurant and obtained video footage that captured the crash showing that I was not at-fault. I couldn’t believe that he actually did this. He then helped me get into a rental and get medical treatment. I am completely satisfied with Phil. He truly went above and beyond to get me through this difficult time in my life.
